Earlier this year, Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning gave us the news that excited many veteran PlayStation fans, that PS1 classic, OddWorld: Abe’s Oddysee would see a HD remake. It seems the project will now be a lot more than just a HD re-skin on what we already know, we can now expect the team at Just Add Water to remake the game from the ground up.
Announced through the Oddworld Inhabitants Facebook page, the post gives a timeline for release and for when we can see some gameplay, it read:
Ok so here’s the skinny on “Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee”…
We decided to reboot it, not just an HD update to the original PS1 title, this is a NEW game. It will be getting it’s first public showing LATER this year, with a release date of NEXT summer (2013).
Lanning also touched on the visual aspect for the game, saying the game will be “redone in a 3D physics engine as a 2D side-scrolling platformer”, really bringing Abe into the modern era. Just Add Water’s Stewart Gilray also had plenty to say about the project when he talked to VG24/7 recently:
We are re-making Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, however we didn’t want the impression to be that we were just doing a port of the PSone title with higher res art. We are starting from scratch on this one, using the original as the blueprint for the game. So technically it’s not a new game, but a from-the-ground-up remake.
I don’t know about you, but I feel an over-whelming sense of nostalgia every time Abe graces my screen. The younger generation might not remember the Mudokon slave and his antics, but will hopefully come to love him when he makes his long-awaited return to consoles in 2013.
