The Wii U gamepad is an impressive piece of kit – essentially merging together an iPad with a traditional game controller. Surely that technology must come at a price though? Just how long will the internal battery power the 9” screen? Thankfully guys we have just the information that you’re looking for!
First of all though, some technical specs about the gamepad itself. First of all, it weighs in at about 1.10 pounds (500 g), and measures approximately 10.06 inches (W) × 5.25 inches (H) × 1.61 inches (D). It features a 6.2-inch screen with a 16:9 (widescreen) aspect ratio.
Motion-sensing technology inside consists of an accelerometer, gyroscope, and a geomagnetic sensor. The unit also boasts a front-facing camera, microphone, stereo sound, rumble functionality, a sensor bar and stylus, and a Near-Field Communication (NFC) chip for use with various cards and (non-specific?) action figures shown off in the Rayman Legends trailer.
OK, so now to the important part – the battery life. According to Nintendo’s official Japanese site, the gamepad will last for around 3.5hrs on full charge, which we would imagine is just about long enough for a lengthy gaming session. If you want to play for longer than that though you would either need to recharge the gamepad (which takes around 2.5hrs apparently), or plug it into the wall with the included AC adapter. Interestingly these charge figures match almost exactly those of the Vita. Weird.
