OK so the Nintendo conference took place earlier today where the first fully fledged games for the new Wii U console were shown off. Taking pride of place in the opening minutes of the conference was a game we were all looking forward to seeing, Pikmin 3.
Looking fine in HD, with some nice detailed textures for the terrain and impressive water effects, a first look at Nintendo in the HD generation it didn’t disappoint. Some gameplay details were shared and Shigeru Miyamoto took to the stage to describe how the game could be played with either the Wii remote and nunchuk or the Wii U Gamepad, with a different experience for each.
Using the gamepad to easily browse the overhead map and command your Pikmin, it seems that the game offers an additional level of tactical gameplay when played in that way, rather than more action and motion control when using the familiar Wii remote.
Pikmin 3 includes all 5 types of Pikmin previously shown in the series, and introduces the Rock Pikmin as well. It was also explained that the single player campaign mode will see you taking control of four different characters who have to work together in controlling their ant-like Pikmin in order to survive.
Pikmin 3 is currently listed as being available during the ‘launch window’ of Wii U, which puts it right around this holiday season.
