EA Sports To Produce UFC Licensed Games Going Forward, THQ Out

Electronic Arts has announced licensing agreement with Zuffa, LLC, to produce and distribute videogames bearing its Ultimate Fighting Championship  (UFC) brand. The new multi-year, multi-product partnership will provide EA the exclusive rights to develop UFC videogames, which will be developed and marketed under the EA SPORTS brand. Zuffa has licensed to EA the UFC rights previously held by THQ, Inc.

ea-ufc-announce-1Ultimately this deal proves two things to me, money talks and THQ is in more trouble than I thought. It’s not secret that Dana White and crew pitched a UFC game to EA a while back and they passed and White didn’t take too kindly to that and made multiple comments saying as such. Now all is forgotten it seems as the two are partnering.

On the other note, for THQ to lose this license which was one of its more popular licensed games suggest they may be in even more dire financial trouble than previously thought. Or perhaps this is part of a strategic restructuring to get the company out of licensed titles and have the focus solely on the development of its core games and new IPs. For my part, I hope it’s the latter. That probably means that EA MMA will instantly become some new UFC branded title which I expect we will hear more about soon

EA MMA wasn’t bad but it was hurt by not having the UFC license, for what its worth I expect EA Sports to do a solid job handling and marketing the games. Hit up the comments and let us know if you agree.
