CD Projekt RED, the developers who brought you a little game called “The Witcher”, has announced that the next title for the Studio will be based on the retro Cyberpunk pen-and-paper system designed by Mike Pondsmith. Pondsmith announced the game during the developers Summer Conference at the end of May. Their upcoming RPG will be designed for those mature and demanding players who expect to be treated seriously while playing.
The game focuses on combat, high-tech weaponry and cybernetic modification all within the futuristic sci-fi location of Night City in California. It takes a lot of stylistic influence from the 1980s, so it will have that retro feel . Marcin Iwinski, CD Projekt co-founder had his own thoughts to say about the game, he stated:
all of the hallmarks of the Witcher series that has made the developer so well-known and loved, and even more. The game will be richly detailed, non-linear, and with a complex and gripping story. This much is expected from the talented studio, but the new universe brings with it some new twists in their game design. Players will experience the world through their own, unique characters chosen from different classes – be they blood-thirsty mercenaries or cunning hackers – that they will equip with vast selection of cybernetic implants and deadly weapons. As in the Witcher series, players will face morally ambiguous choices, their actions influencing events in the world at large and the fate of the individuals they encounter.
CD Projekt seem to be taking the title just as serious as Witcher and the game will be in good hands as veterans of the first two Witcher releases will be on the development team. With Cyberpunk in development, it looks like a sequel to “The Witcher 2” is far off.
We will have to wait and see for more details, E3 might offer some, but we just don’t know.
