So far in the Assassins Creed series, the character of Desmond has merely been a storytelling aid, and has functioned only as a way of getting to the interesting sections set during the Crusades, the Enlightenment etc. Well according to CVG, we will be seeing much more of Desmond in the upcoming Assassins Creed 3.
Matt Turner who is the lead writer on the game, confirmed in an interview that there will be more scenes set in the present featuring Desmond than in previous titles. He said: “All I can say about Desmond’s story is you’re going to experience more Desmond than you’ve ever had before. We’re spending more time on the present than we have in past games.”
I had always imagined that the Assassins Creed series would give us several titles set during the lives of Desmond’s ancestors, bringing us up to more or less the present time before the final game tied everything together, and had the player controlling Desmond as he puts into practice everything he has learned from his stabby relatives. That may still be the case, but you can expect to play as the ex-bartender for a good chunk of Assassins Creed 3. The game is released later this year on PS3, XBOX 360, PC and Wii U.
