Ever since gamers took a cruise down Mario Circuit on the SNES back in 1992, mascot karting games have always been big news. Everyone from Frogger to Crash Bandicoot have been wedged into a racing kart for the gaming masses, and now another entry into the podium has been announced, Little Big Planet Karting. Of course this title shouldn’t come as a major surprise to you, given that a Canadian gaming store unofficially broke the news a few weeks back. Now we have official conformation however, along with a stonking trailer to go with it.

As you can see Little Big Planet Karting doesn’t appear to be your average racing game. Motorstorm: RC type overhead levels are shown, as well as boss battles which perhaps seem to indicate a structure more like the classic Diddy Kong Racing on the N64, in other words a racing adventure game. Sounds good to me, as does using the Little Big Planet’s signature creation tools to make some really off the wall tracks and sharing them with the world.
All this talk of creating your own tracks however does bring to mind a certain other Sony franchise which is currently doing reasonably well on PS3 and Vita. Does Little Big Planet Karting spell doom for the Modnation Racers games? Only time will tell, but surely the two concepts are too close to each other to peacefully co-exist. Another seeming nail in the coffin is that the developer of Modnation, United Front Games, is in charge of this new game in collaboration with Media Molecule.
Little Big Planet Karting is currently scheduled for PS3 only (although don’t rule out a Vita port) and heading our way before the end of the year.
