In the grand scheme of things, the webcast that was scheduled for today out of Japan was never going to be announcing the next Grand Theft Auto or God of War portable titles. Akin to the Nintendo Direct mini-conferences, PlayStation Vita Game Heaven (still love that name!) was used instead to highlight some interesting Japan-centric titbits. While of mostly limited interest to Western gamers, some interesting news was nevertheless shared with Playstation fans around the world, including some new game announcements and a (Japanese) release date for Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on Vita, 28 June if your interested.
Phantasy Star Online 2 was probably the most interesting of the new titles teased today, and was previously a PC exclusive. Other titles shown included Persona 4: The Golden, Super Robot Wars and Gundam Musou. There was also a new Vita game from Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune, codenamed Project Discovery. Unfortunately nothing was shown of that particular project.
The Vita seems to be doing reasonably well in Western territories, even though it continues to struggle in its homeland, and needs more titles like the ones announced today in order to turn its fortunes around. Nothing shown in the webcast really makes up for the current lack of Monster Hunter action, but they at least go some way towards developing Japanese interest. In the UK and USA we seem to have a bit of a lean streak to look forward to now as far as Vita releases go, with the next batch of titles like Resistance: Burning Skies and Gravity Daze due for release in early Summer.
