If you are planning to pick up a Vita next week then there are certainly plenty of decent titles worth spending your time with. I can’t imagine many people going home with a shiny new PS Vita and deciding NOT to pick up Uncharted: Golden Abyss for example, and there are many other games that should appeal to gamers, from Wipeout: 2048 through Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3.
What about over the next couple of months though? When the exciting ‘new console’ feel fades, and your once loved portable powerhouse starts getting left at home more and more? Luckily Sony has you covered, and has announced that Resistance: Burning Skies will be released on May 30th. Resistance will become the first true dual stick FPS on a portable machine and is aiming to deliver an experience essentially identical to that you would get playing on your PS3, with the addition of some touch screen elements.
Set prior to the most recent Resistance games, Burning Skies takes place on the Eastern coast of the US in 1951. Its main character is a fire-fighter called Tom Riley which is also a departure for the series as soldiers normally fill the player character role. The rather spiffing box art hints towards a grittier, visceral approach, which is also less subtly shown by Riley’s choice of a ruddy great axe as his weapon of choice.
Personally I have always been a fan of the Resistance franchise and have never understood its lack of commercial acclaim when compared to stable-mate Killzone, so here’s hoping that it really takes off on Vita. By all accounts we should be set for an impressive console quality experience.
