Multiplayer gaming has come a long way from the days of 4 player split-screen on Goldeneye 007 on N64. Broadband internet connections brought a massive change in how people compete with other gamers, and it seems that the future will offer more of the same. Much much more.
Plenty of gamers are happy with the 12 or so players that you get in a title like Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3, but still others yearn for more PC like experiences involving 64 or even over 100 players. Well all that is small-fry compared to the numbers involved in a Swedish world record attempt. Try 999 players for an idea of true carnage.
Non-profit organization MuchDifferent built FPS game Man VS Machine as an attempt to develop new technology that would allow a lot more players per gaming session than we are used to seeing. They successfully demonstrated that it could work, check out the video below for some real mind-blowing multiplayer action!
The team is hoping to provide this new technology to games developers, so there is a chance that the Xbox 720 and PS4 will find a home for some crazy deathmatches in a couple of years time. This would absolutely outrageous!!
