Even though Microsoft is killing its Microsoft Points system, it looks like even with that flawed system the company did alright reporting a record $144 million in revenue in 2011 for XBLA. The service also saw an 18% increase in title growth. According to market research firm Forecasting and Analysing Digital Entertainment, the improved revenues were powered by 308,000 sales of Ubisoft’s From Dust, and 335,000 downloads of Behemoth’s Castle Crashers. Each title reportedly brought in approximately $4.6 million in revenue each.

It looks like Microsoft’s ‘Summer of Arcade’ was a huge success, with seven of the top ten highest grossing games released during the promotion period. Sony has tried similar promotions but as of yet haven’t seen nearly the success that Microsoft has.
