Ask any gamer to name one title from their youth they would kill to see remade in glorious HD and the answer will come back 99 times out of 100 as Final Fantasy VII. Chock full of memorable moments, from the attack on the Mako reactor, intriguing love triangle between Cloud, Tifa and Aeris, even the cross-dressing antics of our hero, so many memories are bound up in that game.
Frustratingly then, it seems that Square Enix seem reluctant to want to talk about the possibility of a remake, even when so many of their other previous titles have been launched on machines like the DS, original PlayStation and iPad. Sadly, it seems that comments made to website 2d-X at the recent CES 2012 indicate we may be waiting a while yet for any potential re-release.
They spoke to several Square Enix developers, who, although they wanted to stay anonymous, made the following comments about the game. “I’m on the fence about it,” said one. “I’d love to see it, but at the same time I wouldn’t. It wouldn’t be the same, and wouldn’t have the same magic. It’d have voices, and what about the cross dressing part? And what about Aerith’s death? Would we see that in full next-gen graphics? I don’t think I could handle that.”
Another developer told them: “I honestly don’t believe that people truly understand Final Fantasy VII. I think if they went back and played it today, they wouldn’t appreciate it nearly as much as they did before. That might not be the case for all Final Fantasy VII fans, but I think a lot of people need to let it go and accept it for what it is.”
Of course this is only the comments of a couple of people, and certainly doesn’t discount the game ever happening, but what do you think? Of course the original is still available through the PSN store, should we play it the way it was originally intended? Personally, I loved the game back in 1997, I probably prefer Final Fantasy X, which it has been confirmed is getting an HD makeover, for PS3 and Vita this year. I’m also still holding out for a Kingdom Hearts HD collection…
