The first game casualty of 2012 is currently screaming on the beaches, mumbling incoherently about ‘2013’ and being supported to the landing craft by its buddies. By which we mean there is good news and bad news for fans of the XCOM franchise. The shooter revamp of the previously strategy-centric series was due for a release this year, courtesy of developer 2K Marin. Based around a shadowy anti-alien infiltration group in the 50’s the title seemed to take inspiration from its source and take it in a different direction altogether.
Fans weren’t entirely happy though, and feared the loss of the unique feel of the earlier futuristic strategy based titles. It is perhaps partly due to this feedback that the re-launch will now begin with a strategy game being developed by Firaxis which will take place in the same world. The newer title seems to have taken the place of its shooting oriented cousin, which is being put onto the back-burner for release during 2012. That is of course if the Mayans weren’t right and we really do get invaded by aliens in the meantime, that would be ironic.
