Diablo III Releasing Feb 1., No Wait It’s March 31, Oh Never Mind

Yesterday the folks over at Joystiq set the web on fire when they reported that a tipster had spotted a sign in a Best Buy that revealed that Diablo III would in fact February 1st, which would be reasonable since the last info we got on a release date was “early 2012”. Joystiq based their report on a pic sent to them that showed a Best Buy sign with the release date and it even had a countdown. Fans quickly broke down every inch of the picture and noticed that their were some inconsistencies, including the month being spelled wrong. Joystiq did some digging and found out that the sign has since been taken down and found out that it was done in-house and was not official signage. That seemed to put the quash on the February rumor but then they found a U.K retailer, Gameplay, listing the game for a February 3, 2012 release.

Then Blizzard community manager Micah “Bashiok” Whipple took to Twitter and said both “The word is lol” and “We can’t really keep every individual retail shop from making up a date,” as well as “Retailers will not know a date until it’s officially announced through a press release”. Then for our part, we got a tip that Walmart and Amazon CA is now listing the game with a tentative “should ship”  March 31, 2012 release date which is different from the standard “Coming Soon” date that you see everywhere else. I wonder if any of them have it right, at this point we aren’t sure what to make of all this so I think I’ll just wait for an official announcement from Blizzard.
