The Yakuza games have always been a bit of a strange experience, being probably the closest thing to Shenmue sequels with their unusual mix of fighting, karaoke and forklift trucks. OK so maybe that last one hasn’t featured in a Yakuza title yet, but give it time. There is one new thing that the most recent game in the series is providing in spades though, and that’s zombie face-biting action.
That’s right, the protagonists of the series have temporarily ceased their orphanage-saving, hostess-bar frequenting daily lives in order to brutally batter some undead monsters around the head, and you can see how they get on below:
As you can see the game allows you to choose your playable character from a roster of 4, one of whom is a returning figure from Yakuza 2 only this time he is a zombie with a Gatling gun for a right arm, and a hankering for fried octopus. Yes, really. As is usual in the Yakuza series, you will be able to pick up and use pretty much anything in your environment to fulfil all of your zombie bashing needs, from fire extinguishers to chainsaws.
It all seems like pretty good mindless fun, and reviews from Japan were positive if not ecstatic, praising the games combat but criticizing the lack of exploration compared to the main games in the series. You can make up your own minds when Yakuza: Dead Souls is released March next year in Europe and the US.
