Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced that CinemaNow, Best Buy‘s digital movie service, is now available to PSN users in the United. CinemaNow offers new release movies and next day TV episodes available to buy or rent on a pay-per-view basis with no monthly subscription fee (take that Netflix). Cinemanow features a growing library of more than 15,000 movies and TV episodes and has content deals with all the major studios and many independent distributors. This isn’t bad but you have to ask yourself how many different versions of the same basic service do gamers need on their system (CinemaNow, Hulu, Netflix, etc), though I guess if you don’t want it you don’t have to download it.
The service offers new release movies available the same day they come out on DVD and popular TV shows available the day after they air. Additional features of CinemaNow include:
- Rent HD titles complete with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound
- Stream content instantly to your PS3 system
- Purchases are stored in the cloud and can be played back on any internet connectible device featuring the CinemaNow service
PSN users can download the application now from the ‘Media & Apps’ category in PlayStation Store and launch it from the TV/Video Services icon of XMB. New release movies on Cinema Now are available to rent for $3.99 SD and $4.99 HD (may or may not be cheaper than your cable companies on demand pricing); catalog titles rent for $2.99 SD and $3.99 HD. Movies available for EST (electronic sell-through) range in price from $4.99-$15.95.
