EA To Close Melbourne Arm Of Visceral Studios

It’s looking like that is exactly the case with a source from EA’s Visceral Studios in Melbourne apparently telling Kotaku that management has informed staff that the studio will be closing today. This seems to hold trend with the closing of a lot of studios in Australia over the last several months. As the story goes, the Melbourne arm of Visceral Studios had been working on a AAA game for PS3 and Xbox 36o for the past three years. Then new VP of EA’s Game Label, Patrick Soderland, came in and took and look and decided that the game wouldn’t be profitable for the company and pulled the plug on the game and studio. EA’s other two Australian studios, Firemint and Iron Monkey, are not affected by the closure. EA Visceral Melbourne has worked on several titles including Dead Space, Godfather 2, and Dante’s Inferno.

EA has refused to comment on the rumors, the IGDA Melbourne has confirmed the reports through its official Twitter account.

“Confirmation of EA closing Visceral has been received :( our best wishes to the 21 devs now out of a job #EAVisceral.”

As far as Visceral as a whole, there are still studios in Redwood Shores (California), Los Angeles (California), Montreal (Quebec), Shanghai (China).
