HTC Considers Having Their Own OS, HP’s webOS Perhaps The Most Obvious

It looks like the team at HTC has realized they may need their own operating system sometime down the road. If you think about how isolated they are in this department, you can almost see the immediate need for this to happen. For instance, Google has Android and is acquiring Motorola, Nokia has partnered with Microsoft, Apple has their very own iOS, and Samsung, though dependent on Android for the moment, still has their own OS in Bada.

When asked about having their very own OS, HTC’s Chairwoman, Cher Wang stated, “We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse.”

Additionally, there have been rumors about HTC looking to purchase webOS from HP, who has basically killed all hardware running the OS. The big thing there is whether or not they’ll have enough juice to outbid other potential buyers such as Samsung. On the bright side, if they could secure webOS, they would have more ammo to combat Apple and Microsoft on patent issues. Maybe Android is a bit expensive for them after all.

All in all, we just don’t know at this moment what HTC will do. However, what we do know, is that HTC does a great job using other OS’s now. Wang finished up by stating, “We can use any OS we want. We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform. “Our strength lies in understanding an OS, but it does not mean that we have to produce an OS.” That said, what are your thoughts? Should HTC be looking for their own OS? Let us know!
