Until now only brief snippets of a Resistance title were shown as part of the Vita show-reel so we all knew it was on its way, but amongst the news coming from the Gamescom presser was confirmation of the game in its now playable state, and of course the above title.
Set shortly before Resistance 2 saw the Chimera take over the USA, the main protagonist this time around is Jim Riley, a New York firefighter who’s chosen profession means he gets to wield a giant axe. Just the thing for chopping alien skulls like firewood. Unlike the previous handheld Resistance title, this one is a full-blooded FPS which uses the dual stick layout of the Vita to its advantage as well as incorporating some interesting touch screen elements like guiding rockets and triggering melee attacks.
The journos who have played the game at the German show have all commented on just how much of a console-like experience it is, with possibly the only niggling factor being the pedigree of the developers, Nihilistic Games. Their CV doesn’t over-impress, with titles like Conan, Marvel: Rise of the Imperfects and Playstation Move Heroes piling on the pressure of delivering a truly AAA game. We should find out when the game launches, hopefully at some point next year shortly after the delayed launch of the handheld.
