PlayStation 3 Now $249, Not Bad But Still $50 Too High

Sony has just announced that the PlayStation 3 will now retail for just $249.99 (249 Euros in Europe), a $50 price drop for the 160GB model. SCE will also reduce the price of the 320GB model to $299 and euro 299. Sony seems to like Gamescom for these kind of announcements since they announced the last price drop at Gamescom two years ago. The new pricing will be immediately effective for North America and Europe/PAL territories, and starting August 18, 2011 for Japan.

I gotta say that I appreciate the $50 price drop, that makes it a bit more economical for folks but its not quite what we were hoping for. If Sony had dropped the PS3 down to $199, the gaming world would have went nuts. I think that could have been the move that pushed the PS3’s penetration numbers through the roof and consequentially it would have put MS in a position where they would have had to respond and it would ultimately be great for all gamers. This drop didn’t quite get us there but I don’t think we will have to wait another two years for the next price drop.

So what do you all think, am I bugging or would this have been a lot more exciting if they had dropped it $100 instead of just $50?
