Hasbro and Atari have been embroiled in a legal battle over the Dungeons & Dragons license for months now. That seems to be over now with Gamasutra reporting that the two parties have settled out of court and Hasbro and its subsidiary Wizards of the Coast have been awarded full control of the property.
Hasbro took legal action with a charge of fraud in December 2009 when they accused Atari of entering, “an unauthorized sublicensing relationship with Namco Bandai Partners (NBP) for the Dungeons & Dragons digital game rights.” The customary response from Atari came back saying the accusations were “meritless”, looks like that wasn’t the case. In an interesting twist to the story it looks as if Atari will continue to develop and manages games based on the Dungeons & Dragons license. Brr? How that will exactly work is not yet known but we are sure it will involve some sort of kickback to Hasbro on every game sold.
Stay tuned for more details as this plays out.
