Google Labs is shutting down, the latest product in Google’s portfolio to meet such a fate. I can’t say that I am surprised though, it’s almost like Google is a kid that is growing up and putting away its toys. From one perspective I understand it and respect it, on the other hand I just hope they don’t grow up so much that they forget to keep dreaming about what’s possible.
As far as the specifics, in many cases the shutdown will mean ending Labs experiment, though in some cases they will incorporate Labs products and technologies into different product areas. Many of the Labs products that are Android apps today will continue to be available on Android Market. Google also clarified that they don’t have any plans to change in-product experimentation channels like Gmail Labs or Maps Labs. Google Labs is the latest casualty of Google’s growing up but it won’t be the last as the company seeks to streamline operations and focus on key profit drivers like its Android OS and newer products like Google+
