‘GET OVER HEEERE!!!’ Ahem. Sorry guys, just needed to get that out of my system. Normal service has now been resumed. Although my experience of the Mortal Kombat series peaked with the second game and my enthusiasm has certainly waned since, by all accounts the reboot title released earlier this year was a big success both critically and commercially, which makes news of a follow-up not entirely surprising.
Responding on Twitter to questions about whether there would be a story mode for newly released DLC characters, Ed Boon (you know him, ‘Toasty!!’) made the comment; ‘Possible? Yes. Probable? No. Story guys working on next game..’ Of course that ‘next game’ isn’t necessarily Mortal Kombat related but then when another fan asked if this would be a reboot of Mortal Kombat 4, Ed replied by saying ‘We changed the timeline so probably not.’ So another Mortal Kombat title it is then.
Another possibility is that this title could be heading handheld, as developer NetherRealm was one of the first to leak info on the new Sony system when they told the world they had development kits before it was officially announced. Portable gaming is swiftly becoming the new home for beat-em-ups, with Super Streetfighter IV 3D being the best of the 3DS’ launch titles and Street Fighter X Tekken and an unnamed Namco Tekken title on their way to the Vita. Could a Mortal Kombat game be joining them? Imagine fatalities sending a spinal cord flying your way in 3D, or a touch sensitive decapitation, could be fun.
