Dust 514 Will Require A “Cover Charge” From PS3 Players Initially, May Go Free To Play At Some Point

DUST 514 will require a cover charge from PlayStation 3 players, but the fee will be refunded as in-game currency. CCP’s CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson explained it like this:

In the beginning you have to pre-buy credits, so you pay something like $10-$20 to enter the game and you get the equivalent number of credits in the game once you do that. We call this the ‘cover charge’

You’re really getting the game for free but you have to pre-buy credits in the beginning. We might go fully free-to-play down the line, but in the beginning we have a cover charge just to manage the initial launch of it.”

If you haven’t heard of DUST 514, check out the announcement piece we wrote when the game was announced. A long story short is that DUST 514 will be a first person shooter that merges with EVE Online universe, actions in either game will have consequences in the other. When I heard about this at E3 I was really intrigued but I’m always turned off by having to pay for the game itself and then pay to play it. The other thing that concerns me is that they said they might go free to play at some point, depending on how soon after launch that is it might just be smarter to wait.

So for all you folks that saw the E3 stuff and were excited about DUST 514, does this affect how you feel about the game now?
