Redbox announced way back in April that starting June 17th they would be offering video games for rent (both new releases and other titles) at the low/low price of $2 a day. I won’t lie that is a hell of a deal and there isn’t a lot not to love. When you take the fact that the average video game today will cost you $59.99 and lots of people play the game and beat them in a week and then take them back this could change the gaming industry again. Redbox will have games for the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii to start.
At $2 a day, you would have to keep the game almost a month (maximum rental period on games in 24 days anyway) before you even hit the comparable point if you had bought the game new. Depending on the way you play games this might save you a lot of money. The only major concern I have is going to be whether or not Redbox can keep a decent amount of copies of major games in stock. The benefit of picking up a $2 a day new release video game only works if it’s in the Redbox on or close to release date and if they have a copy in stock. If the only have like 5 copies of a game per box then I don’t think it will be a compelling enough value for people to leverage it on a regular basis.
So has anyone rented a new release game from Red Box such as L.A. Noire or Red Faction: Armageddon? Did you have any trouble finding a copy of those titles or any other new games you were looking for? Heck I might go rent Duke Nukem Forever just to see if it’s that bad, I mean its only $2 right?
