Apple has finally decided to start selling “unlocked” iPhone 4 through its Apple Stores. This has been a long time coming and is more significant as we look forward to the future than what it means for the present. For the present though it means that starting today, you can purchase an unlocked GSM iPhone 4 for the low price of only $649 (16GB) and $749 (32GB). This means that your iPhone will then work on any GSM carrier such as AT&T and T-Mobile. To most of us Americans the pricing will seem steep but compared to the rest of the world, those prices are a steal (Sorry, the device isn’t eligible for international shipping). If you want the classic black iPhone 4 you can have it within three business days or you’re trying to get your hands on the smooth white one it will take three to five business days.
As Apple notes on the product description page for the new phones:
“The unlocked iPhone 4 requires an active micro-SIM card that you obtain from a supported GSM wireless carrier,”
The unlocked iPhone 4’s will work on any Apple-supported GSM network around the world but reveals that an iPad 3G micro-SIM card will not work with them. As I mentioned before, T-Mobile customer can now have a working iPhone 4 of their own but should note that data transmission will occur over the noticeably slower EDGE protocol since T-Mobile’s 3G network isn’t compatible with the iPhone. Who’s picking one of these up?
