Fans of alien hunting in the 1950’s rejoice, XCOM by THQ will see release on March 6, 2012. The game is a reboot of the classic PC series of the 90’s and was previously announced as a 360 console exclusive; the title will now be released across the PC, 360 and PS3 platforms.
The original series was set in the near future and in the main featured strategy oriented gameplay, the reboot is described as ‘combining deep, visceral gunplay with powerful sci-fi abilities’ and looked pretty decent when shown at E3 last year. It takes the form of a squad based first person shooter and if anything it’s art style is reminiscent of Resistance 2 as hideous aliens are juxtaposed into 50’s retro Americana. The player takes the role of Special Agent William Carter whose role is to dispense of the invaders with the help of a team of alien butt-kickers and a research team behind him (you can collect intel in the field which the boffins can turn into new weapons for you). The extra development time on this one could turn it into something worth keeping an eye on next spring.
