That looks to be just the case as a recent post by PlayStationLifestyle keenly picks up. The other day we told you about the new Official PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset that will retail for $99.99 and it seemed pretty slick. The guys did some digging and shot over to the official product page and all the way at the bottom noticed an interesting little bit of information.
Surround sound on the PS3™ requires system software version 3.70 or later. Surround Sound does not work with Blu-ray Disc movies.
Well at this point, system software version 3.70 doesn’t exist right? The most recent PS3 system software update was the mandatory 3.61 and the previous version was 3.60, so a jump to 3.70 would have to be pretty significant to be more than just a point release. Guess we will have to stay tuned to see what develops, but it is feasible that this could be a pretty significant update and since the headset won’t be available till September it gives Sony quite a few months to work on it.
