This is one that is very close to our hearts since we use Amazon S3 to host the majority of video we serve on the site. We use several tools to interact with our Amazon S3 bucket and this morning when we went in to upload some video we were shocked when our S3 bucket didn’t appear. We use a client called S3 Browser to interact with our S3 account that is much faster than the normal Amazon console and nothing was there. We thought maybe this was a bug with the S3 tool, so we logged in to Amazon’s web console for AWS and couldn’t see our buckets from there either. At this point we got really worried, we have LOTS of video in our S3 bucket and if that bucket is down then that means video is down all across several of our sites. I rushed to check the video across the different sites and luckily the video all played perfectly. It seems that the data is still there, there is just a problem accessing it.
According to a response from an Amazon employee on the Amazon S3 forum they have checked the buckets of different customers with this same issue and they can confirm that the buckets look fine, it seems a problem for retrieving and listing some buckets. For now that is all we know but we will keep you up to date. Are you experiencing this issue as well? Can you see any of your buckets?
Update: The issue seems resolved now, hopefully this doesn’t happen again.
