The truth is that the scenario is quite possible. If the reports are true that the game’s master DRM key was leaked along with the CryEngine 3 editor then this is a very real and almost likely scenario. At this point, Crysis 2 is set to release on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on March 22nd. This means that the game should be VERY close to going gold, which means that it should be near final build and ready to go to manufacturing. While modifying that master key this late in the game is possible, the folks at Crytek will have to burn some serious midnight oil to make that happen. The master key is at the core of everything, you build good software with good security as basic principle.
My gut is that Crytek will go into full court press to get the code rewrittten and rehardened to make the release date but who knows. What do you think, should Crytek delay Crysis 2 to make sure they get everything taken care of that they need to or should they fight through it and do whatever is necessary to make the original March 22nd release date even if they have to come back with several patches? Let us know in the comments.
