Looks like we won’t have to wait long at all to start decapitating and humiliating our opponents as one of the greatest fighting games ever made makes its long awaited return. Warner Bros. has confirmed that Mortal Kombat will be dropping April 19, 2011 in the U.S. and a day earlier in the U.K.
As we checked that news, we looked around the site and while we gave you the Kratos PS3 exclusive reveal trailer, I didn’t think we had done enough coverage on the new MK, so this post contains a bit of an info blow out including screenshots, trailers and some game info. Enjoy.
In this latest Mortal Kombat we find our fighters on the brink of extinction as Emperor Shao Kahn has finally defeated Raiden and his allies. With everything all but lost, Raiden has but once chance, but once choice and that is go strike Shao Kahn as his most vulnerable, they must go back to the past. Mortal Kombat will feature the most violent, brutal, realistic fatalities ever seen in any Mortal Kombat game today, so if you have a week stomach this isn’t the game for you.
After trying several different things in past games, Mortal Kombat goes back to its original 2D roots and drops in up to 4 player tag-team kombat (ala Tekken Tag). We hear that the fighting mechanics have been tweaked quite a bit and we think that’s a good thing so maybe it will stop people from being able to exploit a small set of moves. From a story perspective, Mortal Kombat goes deeper than any previous installment by taking players back to the first Mortal Kombat tournament to try and reshape history and if they fail all is lost. Even the the game goes back to its 2D roots, the characters, environments and fatalities have never been more life-like and detailed, no more of that comic book stuff, well maybe just a bit. The game will all feature an enhanced online capability and will introduce Co-op arcade mode will purist should appreciate. Check out a couple of Mileena trailers and our boy Johnny Cage. A few screens down there too.
