[Update] Exclusive: Apple Peel 520 Coming To The United States, To Retail For Around $60, Turns iPod Touch Into Phone
We have just got word that GoSolarUSA is about to announce that they will be bringing the Apple Peel 520 to the United States. If you aren’t sure what the Apple Peel 520 is, its the creation of 22-year-old Chinese programmer Pan Yong. The gadget slips over the iPod Touch’s case and includes a battery, dock connector and SIM card. Once the proper software is installed, the Apple Peel adds the ability to make voice calls and text messages using the iPod Touch. This could change the American cell phone market overnight.
According to our sources, the 8K filing was submitted this afternoon finalizing the arrangement.
Update: We just got our hands on a draft of the soon to be released press release and here is what we know. Under the terms of the agreement both GoSolarUSA and Yosion, the company that originally developed the Apple Peel 520, the companies will work together to develop, distribute and secure intellectual property rights for the device worldwide.
When used with Apple’s iPod Touch, the Apple Peel 520 functions as a protective skin that adds mobile voice and text messaging capabilities to the touch-screen media player. Yosion announced last week that September’s initial manufacturing run is already sold out.
“We are so pleased to have reached this agreement with Yosion,” said Tyson Rohde, President of GSLO. “We see the Apple Peel 520 as a stunning breakthrough in mobile technology, and we’re proud to work with Yosion to develop this product for the U.S. market.”
“For right around $60, this device really does transform the iPod Touch into a smartphone,” Rohde said. “If there is a hotter iPod accessory anywhere in the world, we certainly haven’t seen it.”
There has been no street-release date set by GoSolarUSA for the U.S. yet, though we expect the official announcement to come sometime tomorrow. Stay tuned as we try to find out more about this developing story. If there is anything you want to know about the Apple Peel 520, ask it in the comment section and we will try to get it answered for you. Remember where you heard it first.
2nd Update: We just got a response for GoSolarUSA and it looks like with 520 version, jailbreaking is required for it to work. They did note though that per this announcement they are teaming with Yosion to develop a version that will not require this and that product is already in development but no timeline for release has been set. The 520 does support any US SIM card though.
