So some of you may have heard last week that his “airness” had signed a deal of some kind with 2K Sports. That made a lot of gamers say, oh that’s cool but now we are starting to learn just how deep this deal is going to go. Though there hasn’t been an official press release from 2K Sports yet, according to the folks at Game Hunters and then further corroborated for us by a very reliable source of our own, they have confirmed that Micheal Jordan will indeed grace this year’s cover of NBA 2K11.
“It’s an honor to be featured on the cover of NBA 2K11,” Jordan said in a statement. “I have no doubt that NBA 2K11 will be a big hit with gamers and basketball fans alike. I’m looking forward to getting back out onto the court, virtually. Let’s hope they get my dunk from the foul line right.” Wow, now that’s just plain cool, did you ever imagine you would hear him say something like that, I can’t wait to try the free throw line dunk, like the man said get this dunk right 2K.
This is noteworthy on many levels, especially since during most of his playing career and especially near the end of it he did not allow his name or likeness to be used in ANY video game and the NBA didn’t have the right to use it in its licensing deal so in most games we ended up with a generic “Player 23” which we promptly renamed Micheal Jordan. The last game most people will remember him from where his name was used was in the old Jordan vs. Bird but that was a long time ago. It appears that 2K Sports had been trying to get a deal done to where he could be in the game but up until now they hadn’t managed to get it done.
“We’re very confident that this year … will not only be the best basketball game we’ve ever put out, but the best basketball game that’s ever been put out,” Argent said in an interview. “When you start thinking about people that can accurately represent that in the game of basketball, the list is short. And, frankly, the greatest basketball player of all time seemed to be the greatest fit.”
As of yet, there aren’t any real details on how the virtual Jordan will be incorporated into the game, whether he will be unlockable somehow or what, but either way we can’t wait to find out. Whatever his role, the word coming out of 2K Sports is that Jordan won’t just be used to trump of excitement for the game but rather he or at least his virtual persona will play a huge part in several of game’s modes and options. The timing of this is all very interesting considering EA announced today that they were renaming NBA Live to NBA Elite 11 and that it would be the best basketball title ever, who wins? What do you guys think about MJ on the cover, is it totally awesome like we think it is or should a great young player such as Kevin Durant got shown some love?
