EA today introduced Online Pass content from EA SPORTS. Online Pass gives game owners a game-specific, one-time-use registration code for online services, features and bonus content. Each title-specific Online Pass may be used with upcoming releases of EA SPORTS simulation games on the PlayStation3 and Xbox 360 and begins next month with Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 11. The one-time Online Pass registration code comes included with each unit sold new at retail.
Once redeemed, additional Online Passes will be available for $10 but fans can also sign up for a free 7-day trial to experience Online Pass so they don’t have to fork out $10 for something they may not want to use or feel is worth that amount. The feeling among the gaming community is that this ‘Online Pass’ system has been brought in to make sure EA still get some money for the sale of pre-owned games which they usually miss out on as they only usually get money from the initial sale and not any further sales.
“This is an important inflection point in our business because it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhance premium online services to the entire robust EA SPORTS online community”, said Peter Moore, President of EA SPORTS. GameStop has shown support of EA’s digital strategy by selling Sony PlayStation Network cards and Xbox Live Microsoft Points cards with the purchase of new and used EA titles. Moore continued, “We’re delighted that GameStop is offering their support of this program as a place for gamers to purchase points that provide access to downloadable content from EA at their stores and through their website”.
It will be interesting to see whether EA are waiting to see what consumer reaction to the ‘Online Pass’ is and whether they apply it to every single EA Sports game as you get the feeling that most people won’t be willing to pay an extra $10 to play a game as they feel that it is simply not worth it and that it pushes the price of the game up too much.
