One of the most interesting questions of this time of year is who is going to be the cover athlete for Madden and this year is no different, well kinda. The only difference is that this year it won’t be a complete surprise since EA narrowed it down to three guys back in February. EA and Doritos have teamed up for a promotion, that would allow fans to vote on who they wanted to grace this year’s cover. The three candidates for this year’s cover were Vikings’ defensive end Jared Allen, Saints quarterback Drew Brees, and Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne. The Madden NFL 11 cover athlete will be revealed exclusively during a three-hour SportsCenter Special: On the Clock (starting at 4:30pm Eastern, ESPN) on April 22nd – live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City; the site of the 2010 NFL Draft.
Of the possible candidates, I got say I think its going to be a runaway for Drew Brees in one of those ultra hype poses he does pregame where he pumps his fist and gets the team hype. Maybe they will even have one of those covers that appears to move depending on how you turn it, that would be a cool first for Madden wouldn’t it? After bringing a Superbowl to the city of New Orleans for the first time in their 43 year history, you gotta think that no player in the league epitomizes the image of toughness and maturity that the NFL and EA for that matter want to portray more than Drew Breezy. As far as Jared Allen and Reggie Wayne go they are both great players but they didn’t do anything that makes them jump out to me as the cover athlete this year. To be honest, I think EA kind of boxed themselves in this year by announcing the choices because there were some better options to go along with Brees such as 2,000 yard rusher Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans and Darrelle Revis, arguably the best shutdown corner in the league today but oh well no use whining over spilled milk.
As a gaming journalist, I can’t write a story about the Madden cover athlete and not at least mention the curse. I am not going to get into whether or not the curse is real, but let’s just say I can bet that there are a lot of NFC South teams hoping Drew is the man. Anyway, what do you think, will Brees run away with it and do you think EA could have proposed better choices than Allen and Wayne to go along with Brees, if so who? In the meantime, if you can’t wait to find out you can always harass @raczilla and maybe he will tell you, to be honest he probably won’t but you can still try.
