The story in Chinatown Wars centers on Huang Lee, a spoiled and wealthy young member of the Chinese Triad crime syndicate. Huang arrives in Liberty City after the untimely assassination of his father in Hong Kong. With his father dead, Huang must meet with the family’s newest elder patriarch, his power-crazy Uncle Wu ‘Kenny’ Lee.
Huang is tasked with delivering the ‘Yu Jian’ to his Uncle, a sword that’s been a false symbol of honor in the Lee family since his father won it in a card game, claiming it had been passed on for generations. In truth, Huang knows his father was a liar, more focused on his own drug habits and lust for cheap women than anything having to do with honor. Regardless of this, Huang swears to solve the mystery behind his father’s murder – partially because it will ensure his own large inheritance, and also because deep down, Huang knows his father was actually a decent man. And so, Huang decides to deliver the sword to his Uncle, keeping up the facade of honor, tradition, respect and dignity that his family of criminals has never truly known.
Landing at Francis International Airport, things don’t necessarily work out exactly as planned. Ambushed and taken down by a car full of mysterious gunmen, Huang is shot, robbed, and left for dead at the bottom of the Humboldt River. Narrowly escaping death, but now without the Yu Jian, Huang’s Uncle Kenny is furious – as he intended to present the sword as a gift to the aging Triad leader Hsin Jaoming, who is rapidly approaching retirement and is searching for a suitable replacement. Now, in addition to seeking vengeance for his father’s death, Huang must also find the sword to help his Uncle secure his position as leader of the Triads before the power can shift away from the reach of the Lee family.
