Download-only games for consoles have been around for a long time, but only recently has the technology matured enough for you to deliver the kind of high quality experience that was once thought to only be possible with some kind of external media. PC gamers have been doing this for years and no one will argue that the quality gaming experience that you can get on a high-end PC can not be matched by any console that exist today. While console gamers can’t hope to achieve that level of play (at least not on this gen of consoles), where they once expected a less than superior gaming experience from download-only titles they are instead entering what some would call a renaissance.
We are sure that Alien Breed: Evolution will raise the bar even more.
With the recent release of titles such as Punisher: No Mercy and Battlefield: 1943 and the announcement of Alien Breed: Evolution it is becoming very clear that the game is changing and what was once more of a niche market is becoming more mainstream everyday. It used to be that consoles just didn’t have the hardware it took to make download-only titles comparable to PC titles but that is changing with every console generation. I predict that the next generation of consoles will utilize an architecture that looks even more like a computer than this one. Can you imagine your Playstation having upgradable memory, you go to the store buy some more RAM and you get even better performance.
The fact is that the door has been opened and it is too late to close it now, the genie is indeed out of the bottle. Console gamers are no longer looking at download-only titles as child’s play, now they are looking for those titles to step up and provide a gaming experience that is on par with anything they could get if they went out and bought the disc. The great thing about this is that the developer’s get this and are already hard at work on trying to not only fill the market but maximize the quality of products in this space. And when you think about it it only makes business sense, if you can cut down on the production and packaging cost of additional media then you stand to be able to increase your profit margins and that is always a good thing in business.
Battlefield 1943 is so good, EA had to double the server capacity for it though they probably misjudged it in the first place
Is the download-only market poised to one day surpass the current media based construct of today, I think so. It may not be the next gen or even the gen after that but mark my words the rise of download-only titles has started and there is no stopping it.
