Spiderman: Web of Shadows is in one word..FUN. The story begins with Spiderman in a chaotic frenzy in search of Mary Jane. He finally catches up to her but let’s just say this is a bit of a different MJ then some fans of the comics and series may remember. You get into a battle with Venom and defeat him but during this battle something strange happens, you don’t force the symbiote off of Eddie Brock, instead pieces explode off of him and infects you. From this point on, your path is ultimately determined by the decisions you make.
Good or Evil, which path will YOU choose?
The game is flat out a lot of fun to play in my opinion. You can swing through the city and go anywhere. Perhaps the coolest thing about this game besides the completely original storyline, as in it is not based on a movie or comic, is your ability to truly be any type of Spiderman you want. With a simple press of the L3 button, you can seamlessly change from the regular spiderman to the black spiderman and back. This is particularly cool because both suits have their own unique attack sets and moves. The regular Spiderman’s moves are more agile and quick while the black Spiderman’s moves are more powerful and deliberate.
The controls are easy to learn and responsive. There are some problems with the controls, such as you will often find yourself accidentally clicking the L3 button during the middle of an intense battle and changing suits, its not a big problem but it can get annoying. The real cool part of the game is that you can chose to follow the hero path or the villain path in how you deal with situations. On top of all that, there are several familiar faces that you will encounter along the way and some so not familiar faces but its all good.
Personally, I think Spidey looks good in black.
The game is not particularly long if you don’t do any of the side missions, but there is so much to do and that is really how you gain experience points so it would benefit you to do them. Spiderman: Web of Shadows does not deliver anything that you haven’t seen before but it is definitely a solid title as they go. Overall the voice acting is good ironically all of them except for Spiderman himself who sounds like he is only breathing out of one nostril. There is no online component so the replay value is only moderately high, choosing different paths the next time you play. With all of that I give Spiderman: Web of Shadows 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.
