Heavenly Sword Review

So I had to come back and show my girl Nariko some love. This game is one of the hottest titles currently available for the PS3 yet if you didn’t pick up your system close to the initial launch you have probably never even played it, what a shame. The story is based around the ancient Heavenly Sword, which once belonged to a powerful deity but can never be wielded by a human without it slowly but inevitably draining their life-force.

When the invading King destroys the warrior clan that guards the Heavenly Sword, the clan leader’s daughter, Nariko, takes up the sword in a desperate fight for survival. Nariko must now pay the ultimate price as she undertakes one last mission of vengeance against the King and his army before her life is finally and irreparably overtaken by the omnipotent Heavenly Sword.

From a graphics standpoint, this game is visually stunning. From an artistic standpoint it is just beautiful. The colors are bright and vivid and characters facial expressions make you really connect with them.

As far as the game play goes it is right on. I mean through the power of the heavenly sword, you lay down so seriously unholy carnage. Nariko is often outnumbered but you would never know it. When she wields the Heavenly Sword, there will be vengeance. Throughout, Nariko’s quest for Vengeance you will have some awesome boss battles and some simply gorgeous cut scenes. All the bosses are sufficiently tough enough to keep you playing but not so hard it makes you wanna quit. As the story progresses you can’t help but root for Nariko and yet feel pity for her at the same time because you know what fate awaits her at the end or does it?

To date I don’t think any other game has come close to incorporating the six axis controls into the game as well and as appropriately as Heavenly Sword. Not only will you need to use it to get the job done on a LOT of levels, but it’s actually fun to use and is exactly what Sony had in mind when the put that control in the controller, more games should use it this good. The closest game I have seen that kind of made it a part of the game and not an after thought was the recent Dark Sector.

This title was a success on so many levels I think that I think its major shortcoming was that it was an early release on the PS3 and because of that most people have overlooked it with the slew of new titles that are coming out. With Dark Sector, the upcoming GTA IV, MSG 4, and several other great titles you may be pressed for time to fit this title in but if you don’t believe me, then rent it for a weekend and you won’t be disappointed. So for that I give Heavenly Sword a 4.8 out of 5.0. This is definitely a far too often overlooked title who’s only major fault was being released so early. But when you get a chance check it out.
