Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Review, Best FPS on PS3

call-of-duty-modern-warfare-ps3First off let me say that I am not a huge fan of FPS’s. In general I know that the graphics are usually really good but something about them just gets monotonous after a while. I will also account for the fact that I am a PS player through and through and have very little experience with the XBOX. I have played Halo extensively and will never contest anyone that it is and probably will be the best FPS on any console for some time. Ok, so now that we have that out of the way, back to Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare.

What I will say of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare is that it is the best realistic FPS out there. From the moment you start COD: MW, you feel like you are smack dab in the middle of this epic battle that you realize is much bigger than you. At several points in the game they put you in the shoes of key characters and let you experience the game through their eyes, while there is usually nothing you can do in these semi-interactive cutscenes besides look around they are hauntingly effective. As soon as you start the game you will know what I mean. So by now you know the basically storyline you play as one of a few characters, either as a member of British S.A.S or the marines. I think that while the storyline could have been a little deeper as far as how it was written, but in relation to how it was executed it was pretty much flawless. You always know what is going on and what your actions have done to affect that. In all there is a very cohesive story being told and you are smack dab in the middle of it.

I don’t have to tell you that the graphics are awesome. The only scary thing is that the folks at Infinity Ward are just starting to see how far they can push the technology in the PS3. The musical score and sound are also highly realistic and brilliantly used. There are several times throughout the game where the speech audio will get lost in other noise but if you use subtitles you should be fine. But enough about that stuff you wanna know about the gameplay right? Ok fine.

So at your disposal throughout the game there are several devastatingly effective weapons. There are somewhere around 10-15 weapons types, from an AK-47 to the Javelin, an anti-tank/helicopter weapon, which trust me comes in handy from time to time. My personal favorite however is the MP4 Carbine. If it all possible if you don’t have this weapon, attempt to acquire it in every mission it will make your life a lot easier. All weapons react realistically so even though you have a cursor the AK will pull up when you fire lowering accuracy and the like. The MP4 Carbine however has a sight for accuracy, is relatively quiet, can be fired in full automatic or in short precise burst which is my strategy. To me it’s the best multi use weapon in the game, though the sniper rifle comes in handy on more than one occasion, not a bad idea to keep it equipped as a secondary weapon. For anybody who has played SOCOM, or a previous COD understands that the best method is to stay in packs and sweep areas. Before I leave weaponry, I just want to say a quick note about your knife. The knife is a highly effective and at some point vital part of your arsenal. There are certain sections of the game that one or two people can hold you off with relative ease in a tight corridor. Firing while running even with the MP5 becomes erratic at best, so a lot of times you will get killed. In these moments I usually make a run for it, taking the bullets and then make a quick kill with the knife. When there is a decent distance between you and an enemy, this method will never fail you. If you speed burst, you can make a quick kill and move forward relatively fast as opposed to getting in a shootout that could take longer in some instances. Basically, don’t forget about your knife, it’s a very effective part of your arsenal.

The A.I. for this game as a whole is just right. What I mean by this is that the enemies even on intermediate are not dumb and will not take a lot of dumb actions. There are a few missions where they just charge in and you can mow them down but even in those instances they usually attack en masse from the front then attempt to flank you from the sides or behind. As far as your team’s A.I., they are smart too. In most big firefights, they can get the job about 85% done but it will always be up to you come in and finish the last little bit, if you don’t usually they just get stuck in a deadlock with neither side gaining and advantage, you have to be the catalyst that finishes off tough enemies, this is especially important to understand in the timed missions, if you wait for the computer you will never beat them.

Bottom Line

This is the best FPS on the PS3 to date. The single player campaign is awesome, well written, and fun to play. Its only drawback is its length. The game is very short. Most experienced game players could blow through it in six hours or less. Now that maybe a red flag for some players but don’t worry because the multiplayer online is excellent and will give you hours and hours of fun. For all these reasons I give Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 5.0 out of 5.0 stars .
